the depths of life and its pain may be calling onto us and telling us that learning from god and being with him is a lifelong process. perhaps there is no formula that can solve or write away the shadows and darkness of what we go through. in truth, jesus never took them away but filled them with his presence; that is, he is god with us, emmanuel (catalino arevalo, sj). there may be our task and responsibility to learn from him everyday as we deny ourselves and take up our cross like peter, paul and jeremiah. but there also is the joy of god’s presence walking with us through life and promising us that there is indeed what goes beyond us and what we can surrender to.
