st ignatius of loyola gave us a wonderful way to enter this beautiful mystery of god’s call to be with him. he asks us about our desires. indeed our relations with god is not only about our need of him, but moreso of our desire of him (paul gilbert, sj). ignatius asks do you desire conversion? and then if one is caught uncertain by that question, the good saint asks another, “do you desire the desire to be with god?” the foundation of doing good is rooted in our desires, hence the saint asks and directs our desires towards god. a good way to summarize what is being said here is, it is not enough only to know what is good but one has to fall in love with the good, god himself (st augustine). and we can start with our desire for the desire for god.
