the gospel this sunday issues an invitation. in his very words “repay to cesar what belongs to cesar and to god what belongs to god” (mt 22, 21), jesus is reminding us that indeed we are god’s and are called to find ourselves in god. we sometimes sadly fail to recognize god’s presence in our life. he may gently approach us as an invitation to live life to the full (jn 10, 10); or he may come as a call to conversion (is 55, 6); or as depicted in the second reading today, he visits through our community and may also present himself as an inkling to grow in faith hope and love (1 thess 1, 1-5). lastly it may also be that we are being called through the face of our neighbor who is rendered voiceless and reduced to wretchedness by our present society (mt 25, 40). we are given the responsibility today to notice god in his anonymity and to see his presence even in the very facelesness of the poor.
